Maryland West Division

Jennings Randolph Recap

On May 21st ,2005, we had 26 teams fish the 3rd of 5 circuit events for the 2005 Maryland – West division of The Fishers’ of Men National Tournament Trail on Jennings Randolph Lake, a highland reservoir coming out of the north branch of the Upper Potomac River just outside Keyser, West Virginia. This body of water, long believed to be a “dead sea” proved everyone wrong as every team caught legal 12+ inch bass with over half the field recording 5 fish limits. In total, 106 bass were weighed in for a total weight of just under 120 pounds.

Mike Miller and Darin Winters claimed 1st place honors by producing the largest bag at 10.08 pounds, bolstered by the biggest bass of the day, a 4.59 pound “pig” bronzeback to win $1150.00! Second place went to the rookie team of Milton Brown and Derrick Hughes from western Pennsylvania as their mixed bag of green and brown bass weighed in at just under 7 ½ pounds, securing them prize money of $560.00 including honors for 2nd biggest bass of the event. Taking an increasingly commanding lead in the Year-To-Date point’s championship race, on the strength of another consistent limit that earned them 3rd place here on Jennings Randolph was the father / son team of Terry and Brad Weese. Claiming 4th place and $240.00 was the team of David Solties and Daniel Mincin while 5th place and the final check were earned by Brian Shatzer and Brian Kirk with 5 smallmouth that weighed in at 5.77 pounds. Bruce Shives and Kenny Mills finished one out of the money in 6th place while Marlon Whoolery and Jay Barber secured 7th. Eighth place went to Wes and Victor Merkel while 9th was secured by Ron Dewitt and Chuck Harvey. Rounding out the top ten was the team of Shawn Skobel and Gary Crayton.

Before we report on the Friday evening pre-tournament affair kindly hosted by Matt Ross and the Barton Baptist church, it is with the deepest regrets that I must report the passing of one of our members, William Schreck who died Sunday, May 22 nd. Bill came off the water very early Saturday morning, complaining of shortness of breath and Herb Fazenbaker was kind enough to load his boat while Jim Sweitzer and I did what we could to make him comfortable and get him into the truck to take him to the hospital. Unfortunately, he had a heart attack and a subsequent stroke and with Jesus’ loving hand, was taken from this earth the next morning. Folks, you just never know, not that this is the place for any commentary, but it makes Gods message of everlasting salvation that much more important and pertinent to all of us because none of us ever knows when it will be our time.

Emphasizing that point just the night before at our pre-tournament dinner meeting was DJ Rogers who showed through his own personal battle with cancer and subsequent testimony to the power of prayer and believe in Jesus’ healing and saving grace how important the gospel message really is for all of us. Little did he know how close that message would resonate? Eight individuals were so moved by the message that they were motivated to proclaim a renewed commitment to return to God and follow Jesus in all areas of their lives!

We would like to recognize the special efforts of the WV & MD DNR as well as the Army Corp of Engineers for assistance in securing our special exemption permit.
